How to Play

Colossal Cave Adventure is a text adventure game. You explore a vast cave system, collecting treasures and solving puzzles.

Navigation

Click the direction links (North, South, East, West, Up, Down, In, Out) to move between rooms.

Commands

Use "Enter a command" to type freeform commands:

• TAKE / GET — pick up an object (e.g., TAKE LAMP)
• DROP — put down an object
• OPEN / UNLOCK — open something (e.g., OPEN GRATE)
• CLOSE / LOCK — close something
• ON / OFF — turn the lamp on or off
• LOOK — examine your surroundings in detail
• INVENTORY — see what you're carrying
• SCORE — check your score
• EAT / DRINK — consume items
• WAVE — wave an object
• THROW — throw an object
• XYZZY — a magic word...
• HELP — get hints

Tips

• Take the lamp from the building — you'll need it in the cave.
• Get the keys to unlock the grate.
• Explore carefully; the cave is vast and full of surprises.
• Deposit treasures in the building for points.
