Bose once released a line of shades with BCT headphones built into the frame. There were three models or so, they were sick, none of them fit my face perfectly, but who cares. I ended up not getting one, because I thought maybe they'll get cheaper over time. Then it got weird in two ways: a flood of cheap copies came in with built-in speakers that actually play sound over the air into the ears, and the privacy-destroying smartglasses. Good times didn't last
I had great experience with Shokz for a brief period of 1½ years. Then life got in the way, it became impossible to find quiet space and time. At this point I use passive over-the-ear headphones, and it's fine
Have you tried cheaper copies of Shokz? Asking out of curiosity. There's quite a bunch of them at the Bezos shop, but also often at the local consumer electronics stores, and sometimes I can't quite tell the difference, maybe you've done some research

The great thing about bone conduction is that it still works if you block air conduction completely with ear plugs. Shokz don't do active noise cancellation (so far as I know) but with well-fitting earplugs, they block a lot of ambient noise. And when it's less noisy, you don't need the earplugs, so you get the benefit of comfort, too.
Without the earplugs, you can hear other people talking, and carry on a conversation, which is difficult with anything that blocks your ears.
I even have the underwater model for swimming (openswim?) and, although they're not great, they're better than nothing.

Oh, I have to try plugging my ears.
The cheap clone actually came with dumb-ass earplugs.
But as I mentioned, if I tried lifting the elements off my skin, and I still hear most of the music, just muddled. So I was assuming that a good part of the sound is not bone conduction but a dynamic speaker, which they do admit they have.

In the end, I guess you've still got a vibrating mass, so it's going to displace some air. If I have mine loud enough, other people in the room can hear them -- not well, but enough to be annoying. Using ear plugs doesn't stop this happening, but it does mean I can listen at a lower volume. But if I don't mind something stuffed in my ear, I have a bunch of in-ear doodads the offer better sound quality. I really keep the earplugs as a back-up, in case I can't listen properly without.
