Perhaps you could use a scriptable client like Offpunk to accomplish what you want. Offpunk retrieves the files and stores them in a (configuable) cache.

As long as your client can access files from the local filesystem you should be able to read them out of that cache.

thanks, I knew this solution but looking exactly for the separated proxy layer for my browser. it should work exactly as the Kellnr works: it gives me the page instead of crate (when the connection is lost)
