Re: May 2026 Five Questions

Christina's Five Questions for May

I don't normally do these things, but I figured why not? It's a good gemlog starter and I've yet to post much lately.

How did April end for you: with a bang? or with a whimper?

I'm not sure how to answer this, but I can say that taking some time off from work has been nice. Owning a home is a lot of work, and I'm constantly reminded that even if you take time off to do projects and clean up, it just never ends. My kids are _slowly_ learning to clean up after themselves with lots of pokes and prods, but life inevitably makes for a house in disarray. So neither bang or whimper, just plugging along.

What's a website that was legendary a long time ago but is now "a ghost town?"

Yahoo. I'm surprised it actually still exists to be honest. I just loaded it up for the first time in probably years and I'm curious how the make their revenue. Well, I know what it is, loads of advertisements, but you still need visitors for that. I wish advertisers weren't a source of revenue for the internet.

Regarding yahoo, I had an email account there, played many games there (especially pool), and I remember back in the day going through their curated lists of links to discover websites, much the link lists and collaborative wiki we have here on gemini. I'm also pretty sure that I used my yahoo account to activate my Geocities account when I first connected to the internet and started learning HTML. Man that was a long time ago.

Ha - I just got a popup on Yahoo! that has something to do with cookies, but I can't read it because apparently they think I'm in Germany. Well done.

What extinct website(s) are you grateful the Internet Wayback Machine archived?

I don't use the Wayback Machine all that much, but it's helped me with some old games so I'm glad it's around.

Do you ever have days when you are certain none of the eight-plus billion people on the planet have made as many errors that day as you have?

I don't think about how many errors other people make in comparison to my own because I'm too busy try to get all my tasks done at work. If I make a mistake I try to rectify it and move on.

What I do think about is how many errors I make in my hobby-coded programs and how slow of a coder I am. As much as I wanted to, I could never hack it as a professional programmer, and for some reason that bothers me. It is fun, however, to stay techie and putz around with some techie stuff here on Gemini. I enjoy making little games that won't cause a meltdown if they're improperly coded or suddenly go offline.

Is there such a thing as spiritual affinity? Do kindred souls truly recognize each other from afar?

I don't know about souls, but I do think that certain personality types fit together better than others. Being middle-aged, I've seen a lot of personalities, and a lot that are minor versions of the same "template" of personality. Some get along, some don't.
