GiM's gemlog - 2025-07-28 Hello Gemini
Hi. I've been blogging since 2004. Frequency of posts heavily declined after I finished uni and started a full-time job. Something else also has changed. At that point in life I've been quite optimistic about technology in general, I can't say I'm that optimistic anymore.
I've heard about gemini earlier, but wasn't really sure if I want to dive-in there.
I'm not quite sure if gemini is solution to any particular problem, but I - likely as many others here - think and believe, that web today and in particular most of the "social" networks, turned into ugly and hostile places.
There are at least two things in gemini (protocol), that I'm not sure I like:
- TOFU - I know arguments behind it, but I'm not quite buying it. If centralized CAs pose a problem, maybe it would be nicer to come up with some kind of decentralized alternative. (Additionally I've read posts suggesting, that using certificates signed by existing CA is a bad thing and should not be done).
- gemtext or text/gemini - tbh, I'd prefer markdown, mostly because I like links within text, I also wouldn't mind some really basic text formatting. (On top of that - few clients are already doing image inlining).
Anyway, I like that gemini "happened". I like that this is basically grassroots movement, I think both mastodon and gemini might be the best things that happened to/in the internet for quite some time.
Back to blogging. I likely won't be posting often here or in any regular manner, as in general I prefer reading rather than writing (I think that's where the success of ❤️ button comes from). I think it's also sane to expect something similar from other people. I have friends that write a blog piece once a year, but it's still joy to read it.
See you space cowboy...
