The Super Mario Galaxy Movie

Our local cinema went all-in on this movie. Bespoke headrest covers, giant yellow ? cubes in the room, racks of Yoshi and Luma toys, full Mario livery on the corridors, a photo-op where you could sit in a little boat (was this even in the film?), and they even had a real life human announcer come in and give a welcome speech. Epic!

It’s visually impressive, like an exploding paintbox, but it pushes from one action set piece to the next rather than being pulled along by the story. There are plenty of fan service lingering shots inspired by levels from the game, and oh god is it nearly 20 years since that came out?

The kids loved it even though they’ve never even played a Mario game, but it scrapes a bare 3/5 from me. It’s worth watching once, but it lacked the freshness and wit of the first one, replacing it with Minions-esque zaniness.

Jack Black is wasted and should just get on with another Tenacious D movie.

I agree. I don't know enough about the extended universe of the games to comment on all of the fan service but I did like seeing old characters. I've seen it three times in the last three days (kids like it) and there are still parts I can't remember the transition between. Just like you said it is a lot of action set pieces and thin on story. I think 3/5 is a good rating but in my case it's an enthusiastic 3/5 as I don't think a 5/5 version of this movie is possible.
