Lord of the Rings: Return of the King: The Rewatch
It’s been nearly 23 years since I last wrote about this film on this site, and in the meantime surely everything that can be said about it has been said, and yet here we are, saying some more.
Halfway through I was thinking… you know what, this is actually dragging a little. The second half is a lot better. Although it's the capstone on an incredible trilogy, I still have to give it a 4/5. An extremely large value of 4 perhaps, but a lot of the fighting is dull, the rousing speeches are generic, the ghost army is a cheesy deus ex, it's not as quotable or memeable, and the doe-eyed ending is mawkish. Damn, I didn't think I'd be this harsh.
In a just world, all those Oscars would have gone to Fellowship.
We watched the theatrical version. The only part I missed was the Mouth of Sauron.
