I made 60 hours of fasting and…

I've been always fascinating by fasting and its miraculous properties, most studying about longevity and rejuvenating are often citing fasting as one of the key role, most studies saying that during the fasting the body can auto-healing itself, long-story-short: a lot of good things.

It happens that my sister-in-law is a kind of "Food Coach" and she really pushes for fasting and intermittent fasting, so eventually, because the situation, I tried to do a real severe dry fasting, avoid to drink and eat anything during the trial.

It wasn't a pleasant experience…

Surely some fasting expert would tell me that it was my first time, that I wasn't enough prepared or conscious, etc… Unfortunately I did not experience any of the benefits of the prolonged fasting: people who practice it says you are more active, full of energy, very focused etc… On the contrary I experienced all the negative side effect: dizziness, pain, tiresome, lack of energy, and lack of desire to do anything.

I really forced myself to complete some of the tasks I had to do, I am pretty sure without the fasting I would been more productive and energetic. Eventually I felt that I missed the opportunity to close some important things because I was too weak to do more.

What am I learned?

I decided to stop at 60hr because, even though I could endure to 72hr, I wasn't get any of the declared benefits or getting good feeling. I made the experience of stressing my body, I was able to keep my mind straight even though I had access to the kitchen or the water any time. I was diligent.

Will all this stress produce any benefit on my body? I can't tell you, I haven't noticed so far only pain, if I would feeling some positive effect I would complete the 72 hours, but it wasn't my case.

48+ plus of dry fasting is very extreme, I left it to people that already follows some esoteric philosophies and does special diet. As a personal experience I don't recommend it to nobody.

The recovering

When I wrote this gemlog I was still doing the dry fasting, with this new section I'd like to tell about the recovering. Even this latter wasn't smooth as I expected. On my end I was diligent and I did not overeat, actually eating was the last of my desires. I started reintegrated water with electrolytes, than I ate a couples of bananas, and for lunch I had a light salad with tomatoes and tofu. Even after reintegrating water and food into my bodies I continued to feel tired and sore.

At 6 pm sharp, after 6 hours the end of the fasting, my body was still in pain, so much that eventually I decided to take a pain reliever; and it was only the hour after that I started to feel better and more active, with the energy to complete my chores.

Unfortunately even after a week I didn't recognize any health improvement in my body, the only thing I guess I strengthened is my tolerance to eat less, which is something but none of my goals.

Wrapping this up

The benefits of fasting are well known since the ancient times, perhaps a dry fasting can have sense after a personal path and not like the way I did. Many studies support the evidence that you can achieve the same doing intermittent fasting though.

I plan to introduce a week of intermittent fasting each month 20/4, where 20 are the hours you don't eat and drink and 4 the hours you are allowed to have a meal and to drink.

This I hope would have a great benefit on my health without all the stress of a 60hr dry fasting… 🙏
