Gemini on I2P
Published: 2026-05-15
I2P is one of those projects that I grew fond of over the years and I continue to serve things like my website (and a few other things) on it. I come from the world of internet protocol design and infrastructure and I always liked the I2P protocol stack for its versaitility and it's independence of centralized servers.
So the question is, does anyone serve gemsites over I2P? Or is there even an interest in doing so?
I know in order to get this to work practically, gemini browsers would need proper SOCKS support (including name resolution via SOCKS) and the tls handling could be a bit tricky if certificates are issued for a DNS hostname but used on a connection using an i2p address. And stripping away the tls tunnel would render user certificates useless so that's not an option either.
Really, I'm just throwing things against the wall here, maybe something sticks. After all, gemini's small bandwidth usage is an actual advantage over html/http on a network as slow as I2P.
If you have any thoughts, experiences or know of others doing this, just hit me up.
