I feel this conundrum where I love that Geminispace is quiet, devoid of the spam , ad's and nonsense of the web, but still wish more people knew about it and embraced the ethos of it so that , like the early days of connection online with others, you could share with each other. I know there are ways to do that, and I'm still discovering the ins and outs of Geminispace, but shaking what we've been indoctrinated into with the web is hard to shake. I'm trying!

Thank you all for the replies. Yeah, I agree that adopting the small web standard might even be en vogue, but like lars_the_bear said, it "takes and effort of will." Spot on. I will say the community here on Station is definitely the most active I have found.... yet! · 1 month ago

I think @tacomantor has the right of it. I'm involved in other "small web" projects, and I hear the same thing there, too: "It would be better if more people adopted this". The difference is that you can adopt "small web" standards almost by accident, but embracing Gemini takes an effort of will.

Not all Gemini users are disappointed by its small scale. Seen as a kind of social media platform, it's better to deal with a small number of like-minded people than hundreds or thousands you have nothing in common with. · 1 month ago

Spreading the gospel to those who are fed-up with the late-capitalist exploitation of their online behaviour is one way to increase the reach. · 1 month ago

Just my quick 2¢: what you're alluding to isn't inherent to Gemini vs. the web — it's a property of small vs. large communities. IMO, many of the comments here on "Gemini vs. Web" over-conflate the web's technology with its abuses. To a degree these may track, but you *could* build small, user-friendly communities on the web, and if Gemini blew up it *would* get abused — just with a much smaller surface area for potential abuse. · 1 month ago

The negative influence of what the web eventually became, social media in particular, is an externality that has affected a lot more than just alternative corners of the internet like this. It's inescapable, as seen by the two big hubs mimicking Twitter and Reddit. As for more people, I can only incorporate so many usernames, a fraction of Dunbar's number, into my theory of mind. It's more that I wish there was a shared interest basis like that of my youth, when a dozen or two of us could talk about everything, because we all had something in common merely by doing so on a Star Trek game forum. This place leans very technical in an even more esoteric way. · 1 month ago

I hear you. There's a lot different between the early days of connection online with others. Including what stage of life you are in. Also our expectations for how much work we have to put in, how much "like minds" we encounter, and how hard discovery is... has be very conditioned by web2.5. So it's an uphill road worth walking. I think projects like gemcities will help, so thanks for that. · 1 month ago
