hey folks, does anyone here do anything like keep their system configuration backed up somewhere, dotfiles style? I just keep a note in Joplin with my desired apps and other system config notes and it was very helpful recently when I had to reinstall my OS...

There is an unwritten rule that says, “Keep important things off your computer.” This means that if you really want to keep something safe, it's best to store it on external devices. Using a USB flash drive to store important files is always a great option. · 3 months ago

I have a homelab server, so keeping something there away from prying eyes shouldn't be a problem... that being said, me being cypherpunk influenced, I believe in "encrypt all things"! · 3 months ago

A friend of mine keeps a whole image stored somewhere, and re-images his machine regularly. idk how he does it, or how he preserves local changes. but that's another option. · 3 months ago

I've heard of people doing this on a git somewhere, for versioning and accessibility. That said, you'd have to be careful that what was in those dotfiles was either a) safe for anyone to look at, or b) encrypted. Maybe keep it on a private server? · 3 months ago
