However, I have made an exception for Willa Cather. "O Pioneers!" was such a lovely read: the frontier and farming, the hard winters, the romance, the heartbreak!

James Fenimore Cooper

James Fenimore Cooper has a more mixed reputation in modern times than he, in my opinion, deserves. He was extremely popular in his day. He wrote at a time, and also about a time, before the full westward expansion of America was completed. While his views and stories were very much colored by the times he lived in he was much more sympathetic and progressive in certain areas than most of his contemporaries. That said, his work, like many of the works in this collection, should be viewed through the lens of his time. I really enjoyed both "The Deerslayer" and "The Oak Openings". The later is seemingly lesser read, but a very enjoyable read it was. The former is a part of his "Leatherstocking" series, which also includes "The Last of the Mohicans" (et. al).
