Talks
I give talks to online Esperanto groups on the topic of Esperanto music. Two talks are available:
Esperanto Music 1887-1987
Music has always been a part of Esperanto culture, right from the very beginning. This talk gives an overview of the first century of Esperanto music, from the earliest songs, through the eras of paper songbooks, shellac and vinyl records, to the beginning of the rock music movement in the 1980s. In this “extraordinary” talk (according to Ralph Glomp), you will discover and hear the music of Gladys Cosmetto, Frans Jahger, Duo Espera, Margaret Hill, and stars from the history of Esperanto.
The talk lasts just over one hour (plus time for questions/discussion) and includes roughly twenty short extracts of music.
The “Firsts” in Esperanto Music
What was the first song in Esperanto? The first record? And the first cassette? Maybe you already know the answers to these questions - but sometimes the tradition and the reality aren’t quite the same! This talk explodes the myths and explains everything.
The talk lasts approximately 50 minutes (plus time for questions/discussion) and includes roughly twenty short extracts of music.
General Details
My talks include lots of video and audio clips. Because of this, I usually suggest using a pre-recorded version of the talk that is edited to flow nicely, which also means that it can be presented available for groups that I’m unable to attend personally because of time zone differences etc.
My talks are available for any Esperanto group that regularly meets online. I don’t give talks in person or for hybrid in-person/online meetings. Because much of the music is still restricted by copyright, I’m unfortunately unable to allow recording or wider publication of my talks.
I have already given my talks for the following groups and events:
Esperanto in Cardiff
Esperanto Hamburg
Retoso 2025
London Esperanto Club
La Ratkaptista Bando (Hameln)
If you are interested in having my talk for your group, please do get in touch!
