My "bank" (Wise) has now decided to blacklist devices that are rooted "because security". DAMMIT YOU FUCKERS!! I deliberately tear my devices down because I don't trust them or the companies producing them.

Google and Apple gatekeeping shit like this is tiresome.

Out of curiousity, and plz don't like... reveal anything too personal. I'm curious if this is an issue that's limited to USA / 5eyes countries, or if it's worldwide. Do the banking apps do this in Balkan countries? Africa? UAE? · 4 days ago

@ashnar - Agree. This is immensely frustrating. My solutions are: a) have a dedicated "dirty" device for banking that lives in a faraday bag unless needed, and b) use a browser to get to their web page. · 4 days ago

@fripster - Do it. Also, has someone else done this already? Either way, that's a great idea. · 4 days ago

Although this sort of thing is irritating, I absolutely understand why banks and other institutions take this approach. They think they're protecting you from impersonators, and themselves from litigation. They probably aren't but, should it actually come to litigation, they need show they've taken reasonable steps.

Blame the times we live in, but it's not really fair to blame the banks.

Incidentally, the maintainers of Magisk and the like are getting better at hiding the rootedness of the device, but the banks are getting better at detecting it. And the banks are better resourced. · 5 days ago

I have experienced the same frustrations... cash app is particularly odious, because it had been working fine for years and then quit, and their "customer service" is damn near useless... · 5 days ago

I've got one device for banking. One phone and mobile internet.

I then go batshit crazy with a DAP for audio, two ereaders, and an alarm clock/podcast device(the only one that has network access the rest are airgapped). Even then nothing has a google account signed in. I'm a bit on the edges I think. · 5 days ago

I think about keeping one cheap Android phone without any modifications for all this bullshit... Soo annoying... · 5 days ago

We are slowly drawn into the situation that fully free, unsupervised computing is not possible anymore. I really think about getting RiscV computers and making snapshots of full Linux repositories for the future ☹️ · 5 days ago
